The Anglo-German group was originally formed as SHADOWPLAY in Gütersloh in late 1983, named after the Joy Division title of the same name. After their first live performance at the local English youth club at the British military airport in Gütersloh, founding member Ian Stewart left the band and moved to Scotland for family reasons.

Several gigs in NRW, mainly at the Zeche Bochum and Radio and even TV appearances followed. THE FACT supported ALIEN SEX FIEND on their tour all over Germany in November 1986 and got a slight impression of a so called Rock’n’Roll lifestyle. In 1987 THE FACT was invited by the German radio station WDR 1 to record new material at Fairland Studios Bochum. The three songs „Seeds Are Sown“, „Maze“ and „Stop It“ were laid down and got plenty of airplay but were never released on record. In the beginning of 1988 THE FACT disbanded due to artistic differences.

Paul and Gary carried on playing as THE FACT with different guitarists and later changed the group’s name into THE CARRELL SINGERS then THE SAVING GRACES before Paul Swarbrick moved back to England in the beginning of the 90ties. Gary Lincoln then joined forces with Claus Grabke and formed TREE. From there after musical differences in the band Gary and Claus went on to form ALTERNATIVE ALLSTARS. Andreas Calvente has released a handful of solo records under the name RADIOPULPO and with Spanish-German group KARMASURFERS on his own label RADIOPULPO RECORDS.
